Animation concept art: How to design anthropomorphic robots

How should one go about designing anthropomorphic robots and still remain original?

I have been drawing robots for a long time, and have created some methods for myself for coming up with new ideas. One of these is, strangely, to turn the page upside-down and design like that for a while. Then, turn it to its normal orientation and continue. This way you surprise yourself when you turn the paper (or digital canvas). These robots are from the fictional city "Caniton" in our animation. They have a lot of exposed cables that look like noodles. It makes them interesting to animate as well, because the cables are moving in an organic way.
